Midwest Fellowship for Primary Care Champions

Midwest Fellowship for Primary Care Champions

Overview

The Midwest Fellowship for Primary Care Champions (MFPCC) is a HRSA Bureau of Primary Health Care funded 12-month training program designed to identify and promote development of physician leadership skills and increase knowledge of the foundations of high performing primary care and strategies to implement clinic transformational activities. The fellowship combines the clinical expertise of the Department of Family and Community Medicine faculty with the project management and training expertise of MATEC’s team through structured learning and mentorship experiences.

Activities

Fellows translate learning into action in the planning/development of a health care transformation project to address a critical need at their community-based primary care sites. Fellows are encouraged over the course of the fellowship year to serve as educational liaisons and role models to their colleagues and the future healthcare workforce by drawing on expertise obtained through the fellowship. The fellowship addresses a critical need in primary care workforce capacity and projected shortages by fostering positive training and professional development experiences that encourage ongoing fellow commitment to practicing in their respective underserved community-based primary care sites; developing fellows to serve as leaders of their teams to more clearly define team member roles to support integration of care and practice efficiencies to promote overall team and individual professional satisfaction; and charges fellows with the opportunity to serve as positive role models and mentors to the future healthcare workforce to promote rural and underserved career choices. Participating fellows qualify for 30 hours of CME.

In addition, HRSA has partnered with the National Health Service Corp to provide physicians who have completed the MFPCC priority status when applying for NHSC awards and continuation awards. In addition, participants in the NHSC LRP, NHSC Scholarship Program (SP), and NHSC Students to Service (S2S) interested in participating in MFPCC may convert to a half-time contract and continue satisfying their service obligation.
