The HHS Panel on Antiretroviral Guidelines for Adults and Adolescents With HIV Announces Changes to Statin Therapy Guidance

May 27, 2026: The Panel on Antiretroviral Guidelines for Adults and Adolescents (the Panel) updated the Guidelines for the Use of Antiretroviral Agents in Adults and Adolescents With HIV. For a comprehensive list of recent updates, please see What’s New in the Guidelines. The updates to the guidelines are outlined below.

In March 2026, an updated American College of Cardiology (ACC)/American Heart Association (AHA)/Multisociety Dyslipidemia Management Guideline included new recommendations for statin therapy specifically for people with HIV. Because these recommendations were developed by experts in dyslipidemia management, the Panel will remove its “Statin Therapy as Primary Prevention of Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease in People With HIV” section and defer to the ACC/AHA/Multisociety Dyslipidemia Management Guideline for statin therapy guidance.

An overview of statin therapy considerations relevant to people with HIV remains available in the Update on Statin Therapy in People With HIV. Additional considerations on the role of statins and other strategies as primary prevention of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease for people with HIV will be addressed in the Cardiovascular Complications in People With HIV section of the Guidelines in a future update.

To view or download the guidelines, go to the Adult and Adolescent Antiretroviral Guidelines section of the Clinicalinfo website. The guidelines tables and recommendations can also be downloaded as separate PDF files.
